| Many of you know the fabulous song with a whimsical video by the Jonas Brothers- I'm A Sucker For You. Well the Southern Yankees baseball club took the Summer season off while 'dancing on their car's and stumbling out of bars' like the song says. But they realized two things' collectively. They are a sucker for baseball and they go together just like the lyrics in the song say. We couldnt' wait to get back on the field and compete after narrowly missing in the Championship game last June. But like all the bad & good addictions life throws at all of us when we 'cant get enough'- playing baseball again was the 'medicine in the pain and the tattoo inside our brain' that brings all of us back out to the diamond to play the game we love. FOR THE FULL EFFECT open the I'M A SUCKER FOR YOU video in one window,crank up the volume and read the color commentary in another window and start shaking it. Well the Southern Yankees returned to open the 2020 Winter season with a resounding 18-9 victory over the new and much improved crosstown rivals- the Boca Mets. The game started off with the Mets scoring 3 runs each in the first and second innings and the Yankees were down 6-1 early. But there was no panic on this team for the seasoned veterans who have played together for many seasons. The Southern Yankees Baseball Club totally enjoy the camaraderie and good-natured ribbing they dish out & receive each game. They knew they would get their chance and that their bats would come alive. Well it didnt take long after the early wake up call by the Mets and the Yankees stormed right back. By the end of the 3rd inning we were all knotted up as the Yankees bats came alive. They scored 3 more in the 5th and broke the game open. Reidy Oliva was the hitting star on base all 5 times with three hits including a long home-run, 5 RBI and two walks. Sam Bartoleta, Bob Esposito & Vinny Zarella ALL stroked 2 hits apiece to lead the 16 hit attack. The Southern Yankees once again went to their Billy Martin type uptempo offense stealing 10 bases and putting pressure on the defense. All-Star pitcher Bobby Stallone went the distance in the opening game in a gutty performance to get the win. Hats off to the new & improved Boca Mets and to Manager Blaudimir Stouropodous. You have a stud shortstop in Jorge Hernandez. He smacked 3 hits including a long home run besides making all the plays at shortstop. Centerfielder Juan Lowdry also had 3 hits and has a bright future in the league. Good luck to all the Boca Met's players and we are sure to see you again later in the season for another contest. As far as the rest of the players in the SOUTH FLORIDA BASEBALL LEAGUE- I know its been a while but remember what I always tell you-' Don't ever think for a minute you lack or have what it takes to compete and play baseball in one of the most competitive leagues in the country. Never wait or hesitate and get in gear B-4 its too late or you may never get a second chance. That applies to you wondering if you should be out there showcasing your God given talents on the field. All of us have stress & strife and getting in the batters box and squaring one up into the center field gap feels like nothing else. Well almost nothing else.... - Especially when you do it against a pitcher who is half your age all tatted up with a diamond in his ear. So tying this all up together we are all suckers for something and why can't it be a number of things such as baseball. 'We go together' just like the song says. I'm a sucker for you- yes you are! I hope you all enjoyed reading the commentary and you get the inspirational message that we always try to convey to you. The wheel of life is constantly turning and SOON it WILL turn in your direction & you will be eating' Cake by the Ocean'. We are all 'Only Human' but those are yet other subliminal great songs by the talented Jonas Brothers. Its taken hours to write this and put it all together and I'm sure you all have better things to do-so its time to wrap it up.....The Southern Yankees continue their season this Sunday January 19th at 930 am @ Sunset Park with a contest against the Dade Nationals- the veteran tough team that edged the Yankees out in the Championship game last Summer. It will be a good test to see where we are although it is still early in the season. But we collectively as a team look forward to the challenge against the defending champions.THANK-YOU for your time this time until next.
