Just like their first game against the Cape Coral Padres, the Lee County Black Sox were out-hit. And just like the first game, the Sox pulled out a victory fueled by the long ball. With the win, the Sox improve to 7-0 on the season, and extend their winning streak to 13 games.
The Padres wasted no time in jumping out to a sizeable lead, plating 3 runs in the first inning while Darren Bess struck out the first 3 batters he faced. However, the Sox would pick away at the lead, weaseling their way back into the game until Jay Guy's towering grand slam opened up the game in the Sox favor for good.
A scary moment was quickly diffused in the third inning, when Padres batter Milton Diaz lined a hard shot right back off Sox pitcher Matt Vorwald. The ball ricocheted off Vorwald's chest and cheek before dropping to the ground, where it was played to first for an out. It was Diaz's only out of his 4 for 5 game. Vorwald was able to tough it out and remain in the game, finishing 7 innings with 10 hits and 11 K's, while yielding 6 runs (4 earned). Ryan Millican would take the ball in the 8th and locked down his first save with 2 innings of solid pitching.
Aside from Guy's clutch contribution, the Sox were again led by Christian Martinez and Mike Chikosky, who both remained on fire with 2 hits and 2 RBI's apeice. Drew Morris and Vorwald would both collect a pair of hits as well. Tommy Watkins remained a threat on the bases, exhibiting great instincts in converting all 3 of his walks into runs with a pair of stolen bases. Jesse Grinstead also reached twice by base on balls. The Sox collectively drew 10 walks to the Padres 2, making up for the deficit in base hits.
The Black Sox have the opportunity to open a gap in the standings next week, as they travel to Estero to face the perrennial power Fort Myers Hitmen (5-1).
