Black Sox Survive Padres for Win #2.
by Lee County Black Sox (Open Division)

The Lee County Black Sox were outhit on the game 9 to 5 by the Cape Coral Padres, but still managed to come out on top due to walks and a pair of homeruns by Matt Vorwald and Ron DeFreitas. While the Padres were able to hit safely often, they could not consistently plate runners, leaving them stranded on base. Darren Bess kept the Sox bats in check, hurling a complete game loss and only allowing 5 hits but walking 8. It seemed the sox could not quite figure out how, when, or why the bottom kept falling out from under his dirty changeup. However, patience endured, and walks issued to Jason Guy and Justin Cook (3) turned into just enough runs as each scored twice. No Black Sox hitter collected more than one hit on the day. It was the fewest hits by a Black Sox team since the Hitmen held them to 4 hits on December 7, 2008. On the mound, Matt Vorwald stifled the Padres offense, scattering 5 hits over 6 innings of work to earn the win. He collected 12 strikeouts and issued 4 walks and a HBP, allowing an unearned run before handing the ball to Tommy Watkins in relief. Watkins pitched well in his debut, but was victimized by poor defense. He struck out 2 with 2 walks and 2 hits over 1.2 innings, allowing 1 earned run (3 unearned). Dan Smith took over and got in the way of a line drive, taking one off the rear to work out of an 8th inning jam before sealing the 9th for his first save. Padres standouts included Carlos Sanchez (reached base 4 times), Clay Dilbeck (3-4, RBI), Anthony Nieves (1-4, 2RBI), and Pedro Salas (2-3). The Black Sox improved to 2-0, while the Padres dropped to 0-2 on the season. Visit htp://www.leecountyblacksox.com for player profiles, pictures, and more.
