| The error bug bit the Red Sox hard today, as the Cardinals were able to scratch 7 runs from a mere 4 hits in the game. In contrast, the bats of the Red Sox came alive in everything but the most clutch situations, pounding 10 hits but leaving a total of 12 runners on base in the 8 inning affair.
Setting the trend early, Cardinals SS Mike Rubino cleared the bases in the 1st, off of what should have been a routine fly ball to center. The Cards would scatter 4 more runs over the 5th, 6th, and 7th innings, highlighted by a monster solo HR by 3B Evan Purcell. Purcell now has 2 HR in his last 3 games this season.
The Cardinal defense also aided in keeping the game out of reach, with the only 2 errors of the game coming from SP Joe Costanzo. Costanzo gave a quality start, scattering 7 hits, 4 BB, and 6 H while surrendering 3 ER. Jay Robinson would appear for the last 2 innings and the save, giving up 3 hits and a walk while closing the book on the Sox' day. |
