| The Lee County Black Sox began the season by handing the Cape Coral Cubs their first defeat. The Sox jumped out to a big lead in the 2nd inning, but the Cubs crept back into contention late, eventually cutting the deficit to 3 runs. The Cubs squad showed they are not to be discredited, as they flashed outstanding defense and timely hitting in the loss.
The Sox were led by Brad Haley, who went 3-3 with a double, 3 RBI, and a walk. Newcomers also put on a show, with Rich Carroll and Jeff Perry both collecting a pair of hits. Carroll scored twice, and Perry picked up the Sox only stolen base. Drew Morris played Gold Glove defense at second base, helping turn a couple key double-plays, and also reached base 3 times (2 walks, hit) with an RBI. Jason Guy picked up where he left off from last season, knocking out an RBI single and a double while getting plunked to open the game.
Matt Vorwald shut down the Cubs offense through 5 innings, picking up a win while allowing 3 hits and striking out 7. The only blemish came on Mike Rolowicz's no-doubt blast for the Cubs first hit in the 3rd inning. Jeff Balser came on for the last 4 innings to earn the save.
