HOW TO START A FIGHT
by Southern Yankees (35+ Division)

My wife & I were watching Who Wants To Be A Millionaire while we were in bed. I turned to her & said Do you want to have sex?, No' she answered. I then said 'Is that your final answer?' She didn't even look at me this time simply saying Yes'. So I said- 'then I'd like to phone a friend' And that's when the fight started...... After retiring I went to the Social Security office to apply for benefits. The woman behind the counter asked me for my drivers license to verify my age. I looked in my pockets & realized that I had left my wallet at home. I told the woman that I was very sorry but I would have to go back home and come back later. The government worker said 'Unbutton your shirt' So I opened my shirt revealing curly silver hair. She said 'that silver hair on your chest is proof enough for me' & she processed my social security application. When I got home I excitedly told my wife about my experience at the social security office. She turned to me and said 'You should have dropped your trousers. You might have gotten disability too!' And that's when the fight started....... So why are we telling jokes in this SFBL color commentary and why no mention of baseball or the game? Well the Southern Yankees certainly played like they had a fielding disability as they threw away this big contest against the undefeated, untouched & unblemished Palm Beach Angels. Let me explain. In this much anticipated rematch the weather was 68 degrees under sunny blue skies on a perfect field at Sabal Pines Park. The Southern Yankees struck first scoring 2 runs in the top half of inning one. Eric Judd who had pitched like a phenom all season, was struggling with control & wiggling out of jams early. But in the third inning his elbow flared up which caused him to lose control and velocity. The Angels made him pay . With most Angels hitters ahead in the count, All star & all around great person on and off the field Alvaro Gomez came to the dish. He proceeded to hit a 3 run bomb on a full count to deep right and just like that it was 3-2 Angels. They scored a few more runs after that on some timely hits ,a multitude of walks and some sloppy infield play from the Yankees. They led 6-2 after 3 innings but the Southern Yankees came right back scoring 3 runs to make it 6-5 in a tight game in the 6th. But then the champion Angels as is their mantra took advantage of more walks and routine plays that turned into Bad News Bears highlights from the infielders. The Angels always as we mentioned earlier make you pay for your mistakes as all good teams always do. They proceeded to score 5 more runs to blow the game open and coasted the rest of the game on route to an 11-5 victory. Say what you want about the Angels under Player/Manager Jamie Siragusa. But they are a collection of seasoned professionals who collectively & consistently play well. The Angels rarely give the other team extra at bats & make very few mistakes defensively. They capitalize on all the gifts they receive and in this game 12 walks , 7 hits and 3 errors means 22 men reached base safely. And lots of traffic on the bases usually equals good things and keeps the line moving. This win keeps their record unblemished and the only oddity in the game for the Angels was that Siragusa who is a lifetime 350 plus hitter got the golden sombrero and struck out three times along with Yankees shortstop Reidy Oliva. Sam Bartoletta was the lone bright spot for the Southern Yankees slapping three hits while gutting it out with a stomach flu. Eric Judd and Joe Darelli both had two hits apiece. Bob Esposito and Frank Crupi were stellar on defense and Zack Onofrietto hit a very long fly in the gap that Angels center-fielder Gomez made a horizontal leaping catch robbing Z of a triple. We alluded to earlier that Gomez can do it all and he did! Good seeing Mike Fields & Keith Nichols of the Angels who both can still hit with the best of them and make all the plays. Good luck to the Angels but really you don't need any the way that you are playing. So basically this weeks commentary tried to insert a little humor into a game that certainly didn't have many laughs for the Southern Yankees. In baseball you have to move on and the Yankees will re-group and hopefully make a push to get a playoff spot and perhaps another shot at the Angels if the baseball Gods allow it. Our talented ballplayers just couldn't take advantage of the big opportunity they had especially after playing the Angels tough last season in a 14-13 playoff loss. We may have thrown it all away like the classic Phil Collins song. But music was not the theme this week in the color commentary recap and we wanted to interject some humor and write something different for your amusement. Special thanks to Jerry Kranitz for the humorous material. The Southern Yankees team and players will bounce back from this and have their own signature team fight and enthusiastic Yankees baseball the next time we take the field. The end is nearing for most of us and there are two months left in the season and most definately our fun careers on the baseball diamond playing with the youngsters. It been a pleasure and hope you enjoyed it as much as we all did. Remember the wheel of life is always turning and soon it will turn in your direction. Dont ever think or let anyone tell you that you don't have what it takes. Why? Because you do have what it takes. Get in the batter box of life and take your cuts ON and OFF the field. It will translate into success in life and you will remember those words and lines you may have read in these symbolic inspirational recaps. Once again- Thank you for your time this time until next time and ALWAYS Remember to Stay Thirsty My Friends! ..... Submitted by Ray Asmar Southern Yankees Player /Manager
