WOW 9TH INNING HEROICS AGAIN!
by Southern Yankees (35+ Division)

Back in the mid 80's the talented group Dire Straits had a hit song you all remember called the Walk of Life. Well the Southern Yankees must have had that catchy song and fabulously entertaining video in their heads as they played the Dade Red Sox. Let me explain. The contest started out very quietly on a beautiful sun splashed 82 degree afternoon at meticulous Sugar Sand Park. Indeed many of the Red Sox remarked in the pre-game warmups that the field in Boca Raton was one of the best they had ever played on. The contest started out with Red Sox pitcher Jorge Carpio striking out the side in the Yankees first inning. He was tough with an electric slider and sidearm delivery. The Southern Yankees scratched single runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings and after 4 frames it was 2 zip Yankees in a well played fast moving contest. Eric Judd was once again dominating on the mound for the Yankees. He gave up an unearned run in the 5th inning so after 5 it was 2-1 Yankees. The RedSox would score another to tie it in the 7th as infield errors and errant throws once again doomed the Yankees. After 7 it was 2-2 as the battle continued and the game was definately up for grabs. In the 8th the Red Sox scored 2 more off Yankee reliever Joey Mazzeo as walks ,wild pitches and an errant pickoff move led to the runs. The Yankees went quietly in the bottom of the 8th and it was 4-2 Red Sox going into the final 9th inning. But as is the Southern Yankees trademark over many games over the years the magic would once again take place at the end with the pressure & bright lights on. Miggy Franquiz doing his usual arriba el son lets get it started led the bottom of the 9th off with a walk. Sam Bartoletta followed with a clutch single and Pete Fricker smartly moved the runners over with a sacrifice. So with the tying runs on second and third and one out the Southern Yankees still were in their own dire straights. That's when they started singing the tune. Next batter Eric Judd then lined a bullet thru the middle scoring Miggy & Sam and we were knotted up at 4 a piece. A new relief pitcher came in for the Red Sox 3rd baseman & pitcher Marcos Martinez. He struck out the next batter and with 2 outs and Judd at second on a wild pitch a battle at the plate would ensue. After working the count but with two strikes on him Jeff Zagaria hit a chopper to the new third baseman. It looked like a GAME ending out but with Z digging down the line the throw one hopped the first baseman's mitt. It then skipped into foul territory allowing Judd to score the winning Walk OFF RUN. SO WOO HOO like the song says the boys can play even if it seems its only in the 9th inning! Google it and watch the video it is a trip down memory lane with some of the greatest athletes ever assembled and the funny bounces of baseballs, footballs and basketballs in the world of sports. And lots of celebrations like the Southern Yankees got to experience again this past Sunday Funny the name of the Dire Straits album is Sultans of Swing and the swing putting the ball in play made the impossible ,possible resulting in an exciting finish for the Yankees and a disappointing heartbreaking loss for the Red Sox. Hats off to the Sox especially those who came out at home plate & shook hands with us after the frantic finish. The Red Sox played great and have excellent pitching which will carry them far. We look forward to seeing you again later this season. As you know the Yankees played this home game at Sugar Sand in Boca Raton . We customarily wear our home pinstripe white uniforms but opted out of respect for the fallen students and teachers in the terrible tragedy at Stoneman Douglas where the SOUTH FLORIDA BASEBALL LEAGUE has played baseball games before. Our hearts go out to the families and all those who were affected. We will always remember. Getting back to the game Sam Bartoletta led the Southern Yankees with 2 hits along with Eric Judd whose big hit tied it up in the bottom of the 9th and put us in a position to grab the victory from defeat. Frank Crupi made some unbelievable scoops at first base thru-out the game . The Southern Yankees continue the Winter Season Sunday February 25th with a 930 AM morning contest in Plantation @ Sunset Park. Our opponents are the slugging South Florida Dodgers who will crush us unless we get the bats hot again. Once again it is a privilege to be able to play semi- pro baseball in one of the finest leagues in the country while most are experiencing a winter that is finally coming to an end. Don't ever let anyone tell you that you don't have what it takes as I always remind you that the wheel of life is always turning and soon it will turn in your direction. Life is so brief and time is a thief but that's another song from Rod Stewart .And you know what the meaning of my message is especially after the heartbreaking news here in Parkland last week. So get back in the batters box of life and do everything with passion and enthusiasm and appreciate the God given talents and qualities you all possess on and off the field. SPEND QUALITY TIME WITH YOUR FAMILY FRIENDS AND LOVED ONES AND REACH OUT TO THOSE WHO MAY BE LESS FORTUNATE THAN YOU. ENJOY LIFE AND TREAT PEOPLE AS YOU WANT TO BE TREATED. We will resume our closing signature sign off this week after taking last week off out of respect to those who's lives were lost and the families who were affected. As you know if you read these weekly inspiring commentaries it is this : Thank you for your time this time until next time and ALWAYS remember to Stay Thirsty My Friends! submitted by Ray Asmar Southern Yankees Player/ Manager
