| Umpires really dropped the ball on this one. Close game came to the bottom of the 9th inning with bases loaded and Mariners down 1 run 9-8. Mariners leadoff hitter Chris Menendez was at the plate with a full count when a pitch was thrown at ankle-height causing Menendez to jump in order to avoid getting hit. Much to everyone’s surprise, the home plate umpire called it a strike and struck out the batter. This should have been a walk and would have tied the game leaving bases loaded. This is the worst possible way of losing. Even worse, Nationals did their customary childish cheering and screaming in the dugout after there non-merited win.
