| Opening day for the Southern Yankees as they celebrate 20 consecutive years playing on the baseball diamond!... ... more to follow …. Many of you just celebrated the New Year 2023 with your family friends and loved ones as we all said good bye and good riddance to past year and everything that went wrong. During the recent few holiday weekends as many of you probably did; I was out with a tight group of friends on Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach. You know the territory- lots of sights & scenery ,along with a multitude of food and libations available wherever you desired. Our group chowed down outside at a large table on the street Italian style. We gorged on some of our favorites -pasta meatballs and pizza. I mean come on is there anything else better to eat? The food entre's were almost as delish as Bobby Stallone's chicken franchAise at Stallone's Italian Kitchen and Frank Crupi along with some of his favorite teammates, fabulous Pizzeria Sofia's crispy pizza pies. But we managed and all were anticipating the rest of the evening and what & where we were going to go and do. We all came to a standstill at a blues bar and grooved to a fabulous classic music band. I then suggested to the CEO of the household if she would like to go to the Pinball Hall of Fame Museum and Arcade a block off the avenue for some fun old school pinball games. After some cajoling everyone was curious and intrigued at the idea and off we went. We strolled into this eclectic wild amusement like arcade. We secured an hours worth of time and paid to play all of your old pinball games along with other amusements to try. It is called the Silverball MusEUm and all I can say was it was a blast. The group played every conceivable imaginable pinball game from when you were a kid and brought back lots of memories. The place was filled with adults laughing and smiling . So if you are wondering where I was gOing with this here is your grabber line and the theme of this color commentary figured out. The pinball wizardry continued on Opening Day as the Southern Yankees sprayed the ball all over the field and in between. Hey look its been 8 months since I last wrote some colorful inspirational commentary so you knew this wasn't going to be a short one. Anyhow the Southern Yankees shut out the 6X defending champion Dade Nationals 15-0 which led to an unexpected tilt game that no one had anticipated. It was great being back on the field and the camoradarie was intoxicating with everyone getting on each other on the field and in the dugout. To the rest of the talented players in the SFBL - Remember you all have what it takes to make it happen on and off the field. So use your God given talents & skills you have been blessed with. Prove to yourself & all the disbelievers that you are game ready and on time with your swings. Like I always tell you - one of the greatest pleasures in life iS DOING what others say you cannot do!. So make it happen and smile back at them humbly. . Good luck to all of you this season & THANK YOU Commissioner Mickey Filipucci for all you do for the players and fans of the South Florida Baseball League. It was great seeing again Dade Nationals all stars Jose, Player/Manager Orbeta ,Bautista, Robles and the rest of the perennial champs. This was only one game in a long season and THERE ARE PLENTY OF GREAT TALENTED TEAMS IN THE OVER 35 DIVISION WE HAVE TO YET FACE. we look forward to the challenge and our ultimate goal would be of course getting an invitation to the dance down the road where anything can happen. The Southern Yankees were led by hitting stars Steve Sandman & Eric Judd who smashed 3 hits apiece. Bob Stallone, Tom Stallone and Joe D'Arelli also clubbed 2 hits each to lead the attack. Jerry Wichert was on base 4 times and Bob Stallone shut out the champs which is quite an accomplishment.. Reidy Oliva & Eric Judd closed it out with the shutout intact as the Yankees open with a resounding statement win. So in closing next time you are on the Avenue you must check out the Silverball arcade and play the baseball themed pinball game with Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris on it. You will have a blast and plenty of laughs. ITS A PLEASURE TO BE BACK ON THE FIELD FOR THE SOUTHERN YANKEES .
