The Miami BayStars returned to the SFBL after 9 seasons with a decisive season opening WIN in under 3 hours with a final score of 11 to 4. It was cold, really freakin’ cold on opening day for the BayStars with Kelvin Abreu throwing a complete game with 126 pitches, for the Win, caught by Ari Mukamal. There were few errors by each team, BOTH teams taking advantage of each error. BayStars racked up a total of 8 RBI’s earned by Matt “Bodi” Brenowitz, Anthony Brown, and Kirk Szoke. Kelvin Abreu (P) K'd 6 batters, 1B Bodi earned 12 outs, and each BayStar on the field was credited with at least one out in the fielding stats. The South Florida Marlins presented 4 pitchers, and the BayStars studied each one and they stayed sharp. In the bottom of the 8th, the Marlins as home team began chipping away at the lead the BayStars had, getting 3 unearned runs, ending the 8th with a score of 6 to 4. Determination could be felt in the dugout, the BayStars need to increase the lead in the event runs were given up to the Marlins in the bottom of the 9th. Castro got a solid hit, Ascensio earned a walk, Abreu made it to first on a FC. With 2 men on base, Brenowitz stepped up to the plate, hit the ball into an error and in the scramble to get him out at first, Ascensio and Abreu scored and Brenowitz got to first base on an E3. Mukamal was up to bat, 4 Marlins converged to where he hit the ball, they were not having another error, he was out. Morillo made it to first on an E5, Brown tripled driving 2 RBIs (which included Morillo’s run from first to cross the plate) and Kirk Szoke doubled with 1 RBI. Byrd got a solid hit and was safe at 1st, when the inning ended on the 3rd out with Matt Szoke. At the bottom of the 9th the BayStars increased the lead over the Marlins by 5 runs. The SoFl Marlins finished the game, stranding 3 runners with bases loaded and no additional runs scored. Miami BayStars opener yielded an impressive 47 PA, 5 Ks, 7 BBs, 13 Hits, and 11 runs.
