Close but no cigar
by Southern Yankees (35+ Division)

The Southern Yankees fell just short to the newcomer Miami Mariners 6-5 on a crisp sunny opener for both squads. Hats off to young pitcher Javier Diaz who was dazzling for the classy and talented Mariners. More to follow.... The game was very competitive throughout the contest as both teams struggled offensively as the pitching dominated. The Southern Yankees had the bases loaded to open the game in the top of the first inning but Bob Stallone hit a rocket to center field that was caught for the third out. The new team to the South Florida Baseball League the Mariners also went quietly but they scratched out an unearned run and after one inning led 1 zip . It was a beautiful crisp morning with sunny blue skies shining over the players. Each squad absolutely relished playing semi pro baseball again in one of the finest most competitive leagues in the country. Now back to the game. In the second both teams failed to score and Eric Judd pitched perhaps the best game of his stellar career so far & proceeded to strike out all 3 Miami Mariners he faced in the inning. Judd and Miami Mariners pitcher Javiar Diaz the 29 year old starter were setting the tone for the game. In the third inning The Southern Yankees would strike for two runs as Sam MVP Bartoletta smacked the first of his team leading 3 hits to score Joe DaRelli who had lined a single to center field. Pete Fricker roped a fastball to right for a single for an RBI and Eric Judd drove home another to make it 2-1 Southern Yankees. But the Mariners would take advantage of some sloppy but first game expected errors by the infield and scored 4 runs to lead 5-2 after 3 innings. it was going to be a game of who made the fewest mistakes as both pitchers were dealing and wiggled out of trouble on numerous occasions. The Southern Yankees would score a run in the 4th and two more in the fifth on two booming doubles off the bats of Eric Judd and battery-mate Sam Bartoletta. Midway thru the game after 5 innings it was all knotted up at a Hideki Matsui 5-5 . The Mariners scored a run in the 8th on a misplaced fly ball and a long sacrafice fly from do it all third baseman Yohan Garcia. Garcia had two hits to lead his team and also was Brooks Robinson like at 3rd base with the glove making all the plays. The Miami Mariners now led 6-5 and their stellar pitcher kept the Southern Yankees middle to bottom half of the order in check. The Yankees had a runner on first to lead off the 9th inning but an attempted sacrifice bunt wasn't executed and the game ended on a flukey double play and a first victory for the Mariners. Hats off to Sam Bartoletta who smashed 3 hits and was great defensively behind the plate. Also once again Eric Judd was sensational on the mound with 9 strikeouts but unfortunately didn't get the support from the offense or defense that he needed. We win as a team and lose as a team and the Southern Yankees look forward to bouncing back next week with a full squad. It turned out that many of our other star players were at a tournament in Orlando and missed our game. Once again it is a pleasure to be able to play baseball and nothing beats squaring Mr Rawlings up and lining the baseball into the gap. Remember it is a privelige to play baseball with your fellow teammates and all the fine ballplayers in the SOUTH FLORIDA BASEBALL LEAGUE. Don't ever let anyone say that you dont have what it takes to compete. Remember one of my favorite things to do in life is to do what others say you CANNOT do. That means get back in the batters box of life and take your swings. Because if you think you can- you can! . MUCH success to the Southern Yankees Baseball Club as we embark on yet another season of fun baseball and look for that elusive crown down the road. We all enjoyed the comoraderie and razzing as no one is immune to the ribbing! I also want to wish all the players in the SFBL continued success on ON & OFF the field as you will regret not playing down the road. See you at the ballpark.... Thank you for your time this time until next time and in keeping with our tradition for many seasons- always remember to STAY THIRSTY MY FRIENDS! Ray Asmar Player/Manager Southern Yankees
